The intent of this page is to provide novice website owners with some preliminary resources to designing websites to get you started and for the more experienced some resources they may have not seen before.

HTML

HTML (Hypertext Markup language) is the backbone of internet pages and is responsible for many of the wonders of the web. HTML allows you to create static web pages that can specify the contents of the web page and how it looks in a web browser. All the main pages of this website are coded in HTML.

If you have not created a website or coded before a great easy to understand and inexpensive book you may like to get hold of is HTML Quicksteps by Guy Hart-Davis published by McGraw Hill. I brought my copy back in 2006 and still use it today as a great memory jogger. ISBN 0-07-225895-0

A good web based free HTML tutorial can be found on W3Schools.com website in their Tutorials Section

To code in HTML you do not need to get any fancy program. It can be done using any text based software such as Notepad or Wordpad that come free with your Mircosoft operating system. However, for effiency you are of course better off using a program specifically designed for producing web pages.

There are of course the commercial programs available to you such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Mircosoft Front Page, just to name two. However, if you do not want to spend money then you can do as I have and opt for a free program. The one I eventually found that was to my liking was HTML-Kit 292. HTML-Kit 292 is a free program and can be downloaded from the HTML-Kit Website.

In my early days of putting together web pages one task that I found tedious was putting together photo albums. Instead of reinventing the wheel I decided to find a program that would simplify this task. The First program I found was Picasa (now distributed by Google). Picasa can be used to both manage the photos on your computer and generate web pages from the photos you desire. Picasa can be downloaded for free from the Google Picasa Webpage. An example of a page developed with the assistance of Picasa can be found on my personal website in the 2007 Photo Album.

In more recent times I have found another program called iWebAlbum that uses HTML combined with Javascript (See below for information on Javascript) and is excellent for those people who have some understanding of web page coding. iWebAlbum is again a simple to use free program from EunQ.com and can be downloaded from the EunQ Website. An example of a page developed with the assistance of iWebAlbum can be found on my personal website in the 2008 Photo Album.
